SOURCE: BIORA AB Biora Looking to Broaden Its Market Reach With New Indications and New Products
MALMO, Sweden, March 26 /PRNewswire/ -- At a meeting of investors today in Malmo, BIORA AB's (Nasdaq: BIORY - news; Sweden SE: BIOR) President & CEO Tomas Hammargren, overviewed the Company's marketing priorities for Emdogain(R) and updated the participants on the progress of Biora's development-stage pipeline. Biora is building its marketing efforts to establish its lead product, Emdogain, a biology-based product that initiates the re-growth of tooth-supporting tissues lost to periodontal disease, as the periodontists' tool of choice for such procedures. Biora expects to launch its second Emdogain-based product, PrepHgel(TM), to be used for conditioning exposed root surfaces during periodontal surgery, in Europe in the second quarter of 1998 and in the U.S. later this year. Biora will aim to increase its presence in the industry through participating in industry conferences such as next month's American Association of Periodontists conference. Mr. Hammargren reiterated the importance of seeking expanded clinical indications for the uses of Emdogain as key to growing the Company's future success. Presenters at the meeting updated the scientific and clinical progress of the pipeline which consists of six indications at various stages of development. A summary of Biora's pipeline follows: Emdogain Gel This ready-to-use version of Emdogain, supplied in a syringe and attached to a disposable injection needle, is being created for use in the same area of application as Emdogain and could potentially lead to an increase in the use of the product. The final results of the clinical studies, aimed at showing whether the gel is as effective as the original formulation, are expected to be available during the third quarter of 1998. Emdogain and Postoperative Healing The possibility of speeding up the healing process after oral surgery by using Emdogain has become an interesting area of research. Anecdotal evidence has shown a reduction in pain and swelling following treatment with Emdogain. To study this more closely, Biora is currently conducting several clinical studies in cooperation with the University of Gothenburg and Professor Jan Lindhe. Emdogain WT -- wisdom teeth Emdogain WT is being designed for use during complicated wisdom tooth extractions to eliminate or reduce periodontal lesions that typically afflict neighboring teeth. Based on industry statistics, there are approximately ten million complicated tooth extractions performed annually in the US. Biora estimates that at least half of these procedures could potentially benefit from the application of Emdogain WT. Emdogain Non-surgical This newly formulated version of Emdogain, is being created for the treatment of defects caused by periodontal disease. Emdogain Endodontic If a root filling fails, the tooth supporting tissue and parts of the jaw bone near the root apex could be lost which is an indication of remaining infection. Such cases can be treated surgically and Biora is researching the possibility of using Emdogain to facilitate the healing process by regenerating the gum tissue and the jaw bone. Emdogain for Retraction Defects The receding of gum tissue toward the root, often caused by gum inflammation or improper dental hygiene, is esthetically displeasing for many patients who often wish to have this root surface covered. Biora believes an operation to replace gum tissue may be more effective with the use of Emdogain. The Company expects the developmental study for this particular formulation of Emdogain to be completed mid-1999. Increased market penetration in the U.S. During the meeting, Donna Jenks, president of Biora Inc., informed investors that its penetration of the U.S. market has increased during the first two months of 1998. Of the 4000 periodontists in the U.S., about 25 percent (compared to 20 percent at year-end) have purchased the product once and of these about 25 percent (previously 21 percent) have purchased it more than once. The number of American universities with periodontal programs now using Emdogain has increased to 80 percent (previously 68 percent). Biora develops, manufactures, markets and sells products for the treatment of periodontal disease. Using its proprietary technology and expertise, Biora aims to become a world leader in biology-based products for specialized dental therapy. |
