What is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 

Oral and Maxillofacial surgery is a recognized specialty of the dental profession, encompassing the surgical and related treatment of diseases, injuries and deformities involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the face, mouth, teeth, gums and jaws. 

This includes: the correction of severe dental and facial deformities through the use of  orthognathic surgery, placement of dental implants to help replace missing teeth, diagnosis and treatment of a variety of maxillofacial pathology including tumors, and dysfunction of the tempormandibular joint (TMJ) and myofascial pain (muscle pain).  In addition procedures such as removal of impacted wisdom teeth and minor surgery for medically compromised patients may be completed by and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. Oral Surgeons also have extensive training in anaesthesia and pain management allowing them to complete procedures in a safe and comfortable manner.

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon is a graduate of an accredited dental school who has completed additional post-doctorate training in an accredited, hospital-based oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program.
